In the wake of newly unsealed police documents describing a video that
appears to show Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine, Toronto mayoral
candidate Olivia Chow says the current mayor is "no role model for our
children."
On Wednesday, new details of the infamous video were released after an
Ontario Superior Court judge allowed the police documents to be
unsealed. Outside the court, media lawyer Peter Jacobsen read from the
documents describing the approximate one-minute video.
"At one point Mayor Ford holds the glass cylinder in his mouth, lights
the lighter and applies the flame to the tip of the glass cylinder in a
circular motion," Jacobsen said.
The new documents mark the first time an official description of the
video of the mayor has been released. They are connected to the
months-long investigation involving Ford, dubbed Project Brazen 2.
Chow, who is considered a frontrunner in the mayoral race, commented on
the newly released documents shortly after they were released.
"The on-going revelations about Mr. Ford again show why he’s no role
model for our children," Chow said in a statement. "Our city is tired of
the distractions and needs a new mayor."
The former NDP MP was not the only one to weigh in on the documents. A
spokesperson for mayoral candidate David Soknacki also released a
statement.
"Regardless of any disclosures that may emerge from ongoing legal
proceedings, David Soknacki believes it’s already clear to Torontonians
that Mayor Rob Ford must be replaced," Supriya Dwivedi said in a
statement emailed to CTV News.
Ford has not released an official statement in response to the newly unsealed police documents.
As news of the documents circulated through city hall, the mayor, sent a
tweet regarding the Royal Ontario Museum's 100th birthday.
